The mythical Spoon River is based on Midwestern towns people between 1863 and 1910. Not unlike many today, the author Edgar Lee Masters, had a healthy distrust of those who possessed political power. It topples the American myth of the moral superiority of small-town life which is as corrupt as the big city as it is home to murderers, drunkards, crooked bankers and politicians, failed dreamers, bitter wives and a few good souls.
Arena Civic Theatre has taken this play from sad, angry, bitter towns folk and found some humor, joy and beautiful music in their lives. Enjoy this "new look" at Spoon River Anthology in the lovely, air conditioned, handicapped accessible theatre in Historic Deerfield.
